Project Overview
In 2010, the University of Melbourne SIFE participated in the The Let’s Can Hunger Challenge, sponsored by SIFE and the Campbell Soup Company. The Let’s Can Hunger Challenge is mobilising students around the world, coordinating urgent and lasting local hunger relief efforts and generating awareness about hunger.
At present, there is a staggering 2 million people in Australia who rely on food relief at some point every year. To address the hunger problem in Australia, the University of Melbourne SIFE engaged in three exciting initiatives:
-
Casual Dress Days at secondary schools across Melbourne were organised to collect non-perishable food donations from students. This helped to specifically target the need for urgent hunger relief.
-
A speed-dating charity event was hosted to raise funds and awareness for Foodbank, Australia’s largest hunger relief organisation.
-
A partnership was established with a local soup kitchen at the Ascot Vale Community centre to develop a series of ‘7 Handy Hints to Stretch Your Food Budget Further’ posters and pamphlets. These were distributed to the members of the local community.
More than just collecting food and money donations, this project also increased awareness and educated those most in need on how to shop smarter and save money. These initiatives strive to break the cycle of hunger in Australia.
The Let’s Can Hunger Challenge is no longer offered by SIFE Australia, The University of Melbourne SIFE continues to be passionate about the hunger problem.
