Presentation and Pitching Workshop
On Saturday the 6th of August, Victorian high school students came together to participate in the Think.Act.Green Presentation and Pitching workshop. The event was held at the Melbourne University Law School, consisting of lecture style presentations as well as interactive activities designed to inform and empower the attending students.
Gary Zhang, a former SIFE Nationals Presenter and a current Melbourne University Juris Doctor student kick started the day with a speech highlighting the importance of public speaking as a life skill. He emphasised that the best speeches come from the heart and through his inspirational anecdotes; he hoped to break the negative attitude that some students may feel towards public speaking.
Following Gary’s speech, a game of Pictionary was played with only environmental words. The students demonstrated impressive environmental acquaintance as the game was completed in record time!
The students were then split into smaller groups and taken to the Law School seminar rooms where they learnt about presentation skills in an interactive and intimate environment. The students also had a chance to make a short presentation allowing them to practice the presentation techniques that they had just learnt.
Lunch was served at midday, giving the students a chance to talk to their peers about the happenings of the day so far. It also gave Think.Act.Green members the chance to privately approach the teams and give them constructive feedback on their draft proposal.
Following lunch, the students returned to the seminar rooms for the Pitching Workshop. The workshop aimed to impart students with the knowledge and ability to approach outside funding in the situation where they don’t win the Think.Act.Green competition. During the seminar, the students were divided into three groups: corporate, elderly and families, where they were asked to challenge the notion of organic produce from the perspective of their allocated groups.
The Presentation and PItching Workshop was a successful day, with the students working collaboratively and demonstrating fantastic team spirits. The students have demonstrated incredible progress since the start of the program and the proposals exhibit sophistication and great potential.
We would like to thank our key sponsors, Shell Australia and the Faculty of Business and Economics from the University of Melbourne. We would also like to thank Gary Zhang and the hard work from all the Think.Act.Green members and facilitators for making this day possible.
