T.A.G Environmental Conference 2011

April 29th marked the day of the 2011 Think.Act.Green Environmental Conference. More than a hundred secondary school students from fourteen schools from across Victoria came together for the Think.Act.Green kickoff event of the year.

The aim of the day was to involve students in a series of workshops, enhancing their business skills, leadership qualities and environmental awareness. The day comprised of two main segments: the “Great Debate” where students discussed a number of contentious environmental topics and the workshop segment which covered the topics of “Identifying a Need” and “Feasibility”. Students worked in teams to brainstorm and develop a proposal idea to environmentally improve their school.

The Environmental Conference also had the fortune of hosting several compelling guest speakers.

Official opening was conducted by Catherine Ellis from Shell, engaging the students in a presentation regarding the global implications of the energy dilemma and how Shell, as an energy company, is contributing to responsible environmental practises.

Following Catherine, the Think.Act.Green winners from 2010, Presbyterian Ladies College, introduced their winning proposal and provided a student’s perspective to the competition. The PLC team demonstrated how research, teamwork and awareness of environmental issues around their school allowed them to successfully put forward an excellent proposal.

Lastly, Wendy Miller, our keynote speaker humbly shared her career path journey, starting with working for AYCC to now working for one of the biggest renewable energy-consulting firms in Australia. Her diverse work experiences, including attending Copenhagen and meeting world leaders provided a valuable insight to all those in attendance.

We would like to thank our key sponsors, Shell Australia and the Faculty of Business and Economics from the University of Melbourne for making this event possible. We would also like to thank Nagida Clark from Australian Youth Climate Coalition, Fitzroy Nursery, Catherine Ellis from Shell, the 2010 PLC team and special thanks goes to our Keynote speaker, Wendy Miller.

The Environmental Conference was a culmination of the hard work and dedication of the Think.Act.Green team, but it also showcased the incredible enthusiasm Victorian High School students are demonstrating towards environmental sustainability.
