Indigenous Access
Indigenous Access aims to increase the number of indigenous youths attending university. Through greater education, the past can be acknowledged, the present recognised and the aspirations for the future supported. Indigenous Access offers an ‘Encouraging Higher Education’ program, the goal of which is to enhance participation in higher education by facilitating knowledge transfer between student mentors and students from the Rumbalara Football and Netball Club. Working in conjunction with the Munarra Institute of Sport, the program encourages students to develop an interest in completing secondary school, obtaining a scholarship and accessing university.
The Indigenous Access program involves a day trip to the University of Melbourne for every new intake of Year 10 students from the Rumbalara Football and Netball club. Year 10 represents the threshold year level above which secondary school attendance is not mandatory. The aim is to promote the benefits of staying in school so as to gain access to a tertiary institution in later years.
